One of the objectives of the IPA trip was to get a sense of the entrepreneurial environment in the Valley, the culture of creativity. Better to intravenously feed it back into London. This was a good if hopeless ambitious objective given the flying nature of our visits. It left us playing Lloyd Grossman like discerning culture from environment.
So in my best Lloydie, he goes.
What reeked (about from the free flow Starbucks) from the places was their Uni origins. Facebook was a student dorm. Linked In was the MCR. Google was the campus. Adobe was the Emeritus Professors office.
And here to borrow and abuse a famous phrase is the Innovator's Dilemma. There seems to be a progression correlating the age of the company to the nature of the environment and some might argue to the innovatoryness (if that is a word) of the company.
